Montvale and the Pascack Valley offer the community the best education in the region. Our teachers and school administrators are committed to providing students the best education in order to prepare them for the future.

Public Elementary and High Schools
The Board of Education of the Borough of Montvale provides education for all pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade, while the
Pascack Valley Regional High School District provides education for all pupils in the ninth through twelfth grades. The Local Board and Regional Board operates as Type II Districts under the Education Law, codified as Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

The Local Board has seven elected members who are residents of the Borough. The education facilities consist of Memorial Elementary School (391-2900), for grades K-4, and Fieldstone Middle School (391-9000), for grades 5-8.

The Regional Board operates two high school facilities to serve the students from Hillsdale, Montvale, River Vale, and Woodcliff Lake. The original high school, Pascack Valley High School was built in Hillsdale in 1955. In 1963 a second high school was built in Montvale, the Pascack Hills High School, with additions to the facility constructed in 1967. Montvale students attend the Pascack Hills High School (358-7020). 96% of the Pascack Hills High School graduates attended four-year colleges in 1997.

Education Funding
The voters elect the Board of Education members and vote on school budgets. The Superintendent appointed by and responsible to the Board of Education, is the executive in charge of the instruction program and personnel. The Secretary/Business Administrator also appointed by and responsible to the Board, is the chief fiscal officer and is additionally responsible for operation of the physical plant.

The Board of Education adopts its own budget. Residents vote upon the amount to be raised for the taxation for current expense and capital outlay. If the vote of the people at the annual election is favorable, these amounts are certified directly to the County Board of Taxation of Bergen County and the tax rate is struck accordingly. If the voters do not approve the amounts, the budget goes to the Borough's governing body. If it is not acted upon by the Borough governing body within the time specified by law, it then goes to the Commissioner of Education of the State of New Jersey and he, after a hearing, can only approve the total budget, as submitted, or reduce it. In addition, the Board has appeal opportunities to the Commissioner if the Board does not agree with the Borough governing body's action in reducing the budget.
