From Fire Chief Clint Miller
The Montvale Fire Department welcomes new member Carmen Caruso to the ranks. We congratulate
him and wish him well as a new Fire Fighter. The Montvale Fire Department answers fire and
rescue calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are also active in the community by providing
holiday decorations in town center, escorting Santa to town on Christmas Eve, hosting a Mother's
Day pancake breakfast, offering scholarships to local high school students, and providing Fire
Prevention educational programs in the schools with an Open House in the fall to name a few. If
you have a desire to become part of our team, please stop by the firehouse any Thursday evening
after 8pm. We would be happy to talk with you about what we do or just show you around.
VOLUNTEER SERVICE has its rewards.

New Fire Truck Added to Arsenal Against Fires
This year Montvale Fire Department added a new potent firefighting weapon to its arsenal. The new fire truck, built
by Pierce of Wisconsin, is powered by a
Detroit turbocharged diesel rated at 525-horsepower needed to pull its weight of 40 tons. At its heart is a Waterous 2000 GPM single stage pump
with 6 discharge ports not including the 2 water monitors at the front of the rescue bucket, for a total maximum output of 2000-gallon per minute pumping capability plus 400 gallons of onboard water. There are numerous compartments on each side of the apparatus to carry fire
fighting tools, back up breathing air, nozzles, axes, halogen tools etc. The truck also carries multiple feet of
1¾-inch hose, 2½-inch hose, and 3-inch hose for attack lines and back up feed lines. True to its aerial capabilities, the main ladder platform will be able to reach 104 feet, along with
1000 feet of 5-inch hose and 180 feet of ground ladders. The Pierce is also equipped with an onboard electric/hydraulic lighting and power generator for on scene lighting operations. The truck measures 48½ feet long by 11¾ feet high with the ladder in the stowed position.

With spring right around the corner, please be diligent about reducing clutter in the home.
Don't store any materials around furnaces or hot water heaters and keep access ways open to
all electrical panels. It is extremely important that fire hydrants remain accessible throughout
the year. We thank you for your assistance in removing snow in the winter, and please maintain the
landscaping near the hydrants in your neighborhood throughout the rest of the year.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
If you have not checked the batteries in your detectors during Fire Prevention Week, now is a good time
to do so. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors do save lives, but like every thing else, they need to
be maintained. If an emergency does arise, you will be glad you did.

If you have not done so yet, please be certain to check your BBQ grills before the cooking season
starts. Check to see that all connections do not leak, (use soapy water sprayed on connections
to check for leaks) and check hoses to make sure there are no cracks or worn spots and replace
if necessary. Never store propane cylinders indoors. Check with your local distributor to be
sure that the cylinders are not out of date. Use caution in storing gasoline. Always use the
approved containers for storing gasoline. Never store any flammables near any source of ignition,
such as pilot lights and gas hot water heaters or any heating devices.
