Montvale Summer Camp Cancellation

It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you of the need to cancel Rec and Adventure Camp this year. While we have been working diligently to put on a camp that would meet the new Youth Summer Camp Standards, we have reached a legal roadblock that we are not able to overcome. The new guidelines put in place by the State due to the COVID-19 pandemic require us to assign an adult (in addition to counselors) to each group individually. For our camp, this meant we needed to recruit 14 new adult employees to work in camp, which was an additional cost that the Borough was willing to assume.

However, in order to comply with State Law and the Youth Camp Standards, all adults would be required to complete and pass a NJ State Police background check to be eligible to work in camp. Unfortunately, the background check division of the State Police confirmed that they are unable to receive, process and provide results of background checks in time for camp this summer, even if we delayed the camp dates again. I personally spoke to employees in the background check division who advised me that they are still trying to process background check requests that were received three months ago.  We could not and would not ever consider employing an adult in any of our programs or camps who has not gone through the proper channels of background certification, and State Law does not permit us to complete these background checks through any other method.  We reached out to the Governor’s Office through a variety of channels in an attempt to find an accommodation on this requirement, but we were not given any alternative to complete these background checks in time.  Simply put, the guidelines were released too late which has now prevented us from being able to run camp while being in compliance with State Law and the newly-released summer camp guidelines.

As camp directors, we are deeply saddened and disappointed by this year’s outcome as we love camp and recognize the anticipated excitement that our campers and staff have year to year. We anticipate camp will be back in full swing and better than ever next year, when we look forward to welcoming all of our campers and staff again.

In the meantime, we are actively looking into the feasibility of alternate programming options that we can offer while still meeting the Youth Summer Camp Standards.  For this summer, this may include programs such as instructional lessons for individual sports or enrichment-based clubs. We will send out more information and possibly parent surveys when we put more detail into this plan.

Full refunds, including online processing fees, will be issued to all registrants for the cancelled camp programs. If you registered online by credit card, you will automatically receive credit on that payment method in early July. If a cash or check payment was submitted for camp fees and/or lunches, please be on the lookout for a purchase order in the mail that will require signature in order to further process the refund. If we are not in receipt of the signed purchase order, we will not be able to issue a check refund.

We greatly appreciate all of the patience, support and understanding that all parents have shown thus far. While this is not the outcome we anticipated or wanted, the State’s late release of the Youth Summer Camp Standards made it impossible to comply with the new requirements in time to offer summer camp programs.  Although this situation is regrettable, please know that our primary concern throughout this process has been to protect the health, safety and well-being of all children, counselors and their families.

Sincerely,

Lisa Dent
